There are currently around 40 kilometres of cycle paths in and around Palanga. There are plenty of routes to suit different needs: from routes with the tranquillity of nature to the cultural symbols of Palanga, from distances of a few kilometres to tens of kilometres of cycling. All of these routes are equipped with rest areas, so if you need a break, you'll find somewhere to stop, sit down and rest.
1. Route.
The cycling trip from Palanga to Šventoji is enriched with pleasant views of the seaside nature and a fascinating cultural exploration of the area. The route stretches for about 14 kilometres along the Baltic Sea coast, and you will enjoy beautiful seaside views and fresh sea air.
- Starting your journey in the centre of Palanga, you will first pass through Palanga Amber Museum. And although you can't cycle in the park, if you feel like it, you can visit the park to admire the nature, sit on a bench and enjoy the peace and quiet around you
- Next, you'll start your journey along the seaside: there is a cycle path next to the sea, where you'll hear the sound of the sea, see the pine forests by the sea and the sea beyond.
- Visit Palanga Bridge: no matter how many times I visit, it's always a pleasure to admire the views and look out to the horizon.
- Next, you will reach Mount Nagle - A 15-metre-high Baltic coastal dune, surrounded by a pleasant, peaceful natural haven.
- As you continue your journey through the seaside pine forests, you will easily pass one of the most famous and visible structures Sventoji - water tower. This concrete water tank of 600 cubic metres is still being used for its intended purpose.
- As you continue your journey, you will pass the remains of the old Šventoji Bridge. This place has an interesting and distinctive landscape - you will find seclusion, tranquillity, and water birds roosting on the remains of the bridge. Nearby is another famous symbol of Sventoji: the 4-meter high sculpture "Fisherman's Daughters" - a great place to stop and admire the view of the sea.
- Before heading back to Palanga, you will visit Holy Church, which has a viewing platform. After climbing 200 steps, you will have a wonderful panorama of Šventoji town from 40 metres high - the magnificent harbour, the enchanting sea, cosy, authentic houses and, on a sunny day, even Palanga. Important: If you want to climb the tower of the Holy Church, you must make a reservation in advance by calling 8 687 17613.
2. Palanga - Olando kepurė - Palanga ~35 km
If you want to get away from the city limits of Palanga, want to see more of nature and enjoy the more remote corners of nature - this is the right route for you, enriched with nature, tranquillity and, most probably, undiscovered seaside places.
- You will start your journey from Palanga Church of St. Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary - Did you know it has an observation deck? It's free to climb up, and the panorama of Palanga from 21.4 metres high will leave an unforgettable impression.
- Next, you will reach Nemirseta: here you can enjoy a much quieter beach, away from the crowds. The Nemirseta dunes stand out from all the other coastal dunes because they cover a large area and have a wide variety of terrain, from plains to hills. We also recommend a visit to the wooden observation deck, which offers a wonderful view of the landscape: the ancient sloping shore of the Litorina Sea, which turns into sandy plains shaped by the wind.
- The route then leads to Plaze Nature Reservewhere you will see a variety of plants and animals that are unique to this stretch of coastline, natural seaside meadows and the Plazė Lake, home to species listed in the Lithuanian Red Data Book, which you will be able to observe from an observation station.
- Continue your drive and enjoy the iodine-rich air until you reach Karklė: explore the buildings, admire the old architecture, and visit the cemetery nestled in the dunes overlooking the sea.
- In Karkle you will finish the puzzle at "The "Dutch Cap" cliff. This is one of the most beautiful corners of Lithuania, and well worth cycling to. Here you can choose whether to continue cycling or take a walk along the cognitive "Litorina path".
3. Route: around Palanga ~15km
A route where you will not only admire the views of nature, but also visit significant historical sites of Palanga: you will pass Birutė Hill, look around the old buildings of Palanga, the Kurhaus, the resort's attraction.
- You will start your journey from the most striking symbol of Palanga - Palanga Bridge.
- You will pass the equally important and symbolic Palanga square - the fountain with the sculpture "Jurate and Kastytis".
- As you walk through the cosy streets of Palanga, you will pass Birutė Park and although the park is not accessible by bicycle, we encourage you to visit the park on foot to enjoy its beautifully landscaped surroundings.
- Take a drive through the quiet streets of Palanga - note the authenticity of the old architecture of Palanga.
- The journey will take you to Palanga Church of St. Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, we recommend climbing up to the observation deck - you will see a spectacular panorama of Palanga before your eyes.
- Further along Jūratės Street, you can stop at the musical fountain - if you're travelling with children, this will be a fun activity for them.
- Cycling-friendly roads lead you to Naglis Hill, a 15-metre-high Baltic coastal dune where you can stop and enjoy a peaceful nature retreat.
- The journey continues along the seaside cycle path to the quiet, cosy and small summer tourist town of Kunigiskes, which you will return to Palanga after visiting.
